Uprights
Unique Design. 35 different stock upright sizes available in Light, Medium and Heavy Duty. All uprights are punched with tempered keyhole slots every 2". Totally enclosed upright tube provides greater strength-to-weight ratio. Minimum-sized slots means more steel per upright. Upright structures are 100% MIG welded with precision "K" brace and heavy duty cross channel reinforcement for increased strength, rigidity and resistance to abuse. |

Lyon roll-formed beams are super strong, and feature an integral step for decking. The completely enclosed design gives your installation a clean appearance.

Three-Point Safety Catch. Each beam has three rugged studs (four on heavy duty) that engage the tapered keyhole slots in the upright with a compression fit. Integral safety lock automatically locks into place when beam is properly seated. Heavy duty locks are replaceable. Lock can easily be changed if damaged, eliminating the need to replace the entire beam. |

Front-To-Back Supports. Pronged front-to-back bars seat in pre-slotted beams to prevent spreading on extra wide racks, simplifying proper installation. Plywood support channels allow the use of plywood or other decking materials. |
|

Choose light, medium, heavy duty or extra heavy duty stock uprights to suit your storage requirements. Light and medium duty upright posts are 3"W x 1 5/8"D, heavy and extra heavy duty upright posts are 3" square. Two upright frames are required per bay, and any number may be joined together in continuous row applications. Uprights conform to standards set by the 1997 Rack Manufacturers' Institute LRFD Specifications.
How To Order Uprights:
Compute total frame capacity needed to satisfy your load requirements. Determine height required from floor to first beam or maximum beam spacing. If the figures are different from our examples, use the next larger dimension. Refer to bottom of upright capacity chart. Reading left-to-right, locate dimension from floor to first beam or maximum beam spacing. From the beam spacing dimension, move vertically up the chart to weight capacity required for your maximum load. Moving to the right, locate the first upright capacity curve that intersects your required weight capacity. Follow curve down and across to determine correct upright post type. Refer to appropriate ordering information (light, medium, heavy or extra heavy duty) for dimensional information, and select from the available sizes. |

Beam Ordering Information: Stock beams are available in clear spans from 96" to 144" with capacities from 2800 lbs. to 8330 lbs. per pair. These roll-formed beams feature an integrated 1 5/8" step for decking and are totally enclosed for clean applications. Heavy duty rivet-type connectors engage upright wedge slots for increased holding power. Safety catch locks into place when beams are properly positioned. Beams are easy to assemble, disassemble and relocate.
How To Order Beams:
1. Determine load weights per pair of beams (two 2500 lb. pallet loads = 5000 lb. beam capacity).
2. Determine length of beam required based on load width and minimum clearances (minimum clearance between pallets and pallet to upright is 4", or for two 48" pallets, a total of 12". Use 108" beam).
3. Refer to desired beam length and move across chart to rated capacities. (For 108" beam and 5000 lb. load select beam LBS-435-L108.)
4. Using type of beam (Light, Medium or Heavy) and length of beam required, determine stock product number from ordering information.
NOTE: Beams 120" long and greater should be tied together with at least one front-to-back support except when solid decking panels are used. Beams conform to the standards set by the 1997 Rack Manufacturers' Institute LRFD Specifications.

Wire Rack Decking
This heavy duty waterfall decking features a 2 1/2" x 4" x 6 ga. wire mesh with 13 ga. steel channels for safe, durable storage and ease of installation. Wire mesh allows for easy viewing of inventory and works efficiently with overhead sprinkler systems: meets all fire and safety regulations. | LYON Pallet Rack Safety Recommendations |
|
Determine actual load requirements as accurately as possible and adhere to rated capacities shown in the tables shown below. Lyon pallet rack is engineered for long life and under normal operating conditions, will provide years of trouble-free service.
Frame Depth: Recommended pallet overhang is 3". For pallets 48" deep, recommended frame depth is 42".
Frame Height: When determining load heights, remember to include height of pallet. For lower-level storage, allow 4" minimum clearance between top of load and bottom of next highest beam. Allow 6" minimum clearance at higher loading levels and not less than 18" (or as required by local codes) between uppermost load and ceiling sprinkler units.
Beam Length: Lyon recommends a clearance of 4" between palletized loads - and between loads and uprights. Minimum clearance between loads and upright posts should not be less than 3". Beams over 120" in length should be tied together with the appropriate front-to-back bar to maintain proper spacing at each storage level.
Back-To-Back Clearance: Clearance should be suffient to accommodate minimum pallet overhang and tolerances - where pallet placement may vary. Additional clearances may be required to accommodate building structures or intermediate sprinkler systems (according to local codes).
Installation and Anchoring: To insure minimum stabilty standards, racks should be level, plumb and properly anchored. |
Example: Based on 2500 lbs. per Pallet, 5000 lbs. per Bay, placement as shown in diagram.
Select proper beams and uprights
Beams: Load - 5000 lbs. per pair. Using pallet width information, select 108" beam length - No. LBS-435-L108 - with a 5000 lb. capacity rating.
Upright Frames: Load - 6 loads x 2500 lbs. = 15000 lbs. Using pallet load height and depth information, select frame size 42" x 168". Use height to first beam (or maximum beam spacing - whichever is greater) 54".
Use the upright frame capacity chart for a 54" spacing and select the regular capacity post. Refer to ordering information for product numbers and select No. LU-324-42M168.
Additional Precautions should be taken in applications where extraordinary rack abuse is anticipated. For example, when narrow aisles are used for high speed or high inventory turnover applications, Lyon recommends additional rack reinforcement. Impact supports and aisle guidance devices may be advisable - especially at aisle intersections and other vulnerable locations.
NOTE: Load carrying capacities for individual accessories listed are based on evenly distributed loads and are limited by the support capacity of the beams and / or upright assemblies. When skid supports, fork entry bars and / or front-to-back supports are used to support the load, the weight is not evenly distributed to the beam, therefore, beam capacities are reduced significantly. |

Things to Think About When Purchasing Racking:
- Responsibility between lift truck and rack system. Who will take it?
- Is there enough aisle spacing to operate the truck? Pallet rack is one thing; drive-in rack requires another aisle spacing. Pushback and pallet flow rack take up to 1' 6" more aisle space than pallet rack. Because the truck must go straight in and out of the system, the operator can't begin to turn into the load before being straight in front of it.
- 95% of all rack collapses are due to operator error. Abuse is just like a car. Sometimes it is driven off the lot and totaled within one day, sometimes the car never gets into a wreck.
- Know your loads by weight. Don't guess. Overloading can be a real problem.
- Be honest about your operators. If you already have rack abuse you will continue to have it. Ways to change this pattern: A) additional training, B) wider aisles, C) cutting cross aisle traffic down.
- Design from the inside out, not the other way around.
- Look at your competitors' facilities. Not all companies are the same.
- Anybody can sell rack. New or used. But what do you get? Is it the right height, depth or type?
- Don't buy a piece of lift equipment before you buy your rack system. Remember lift truck houses sell lift trucks because that is what they are supposed to do, just like a car dealer.
- Everybody wants their product like Burger King. They are in such a rush to get it off their desk that they many times make a mistake. For some reason there always seems to be enough time to get it corrected but not enough time to do it right in the first place. Remember to allow enough time to plan, don't rush.
- When should you replace a rack? A) Broken welds on upright, B) Beams creased or bowed in, C) Column off of footplate.
- A pallet should overhang a beam by 3" front and back in order for the stated capacity to be valid, otherwise the capacity has to be down-rated.
