The leading causes of storage rack system failure are human error, not seismic activity. While seismic activity is not a primary cause of rack failure, building pallet rack to seismic specifications helps protect against catastrophic loss and is absolutely essential in high earthquake risk areas. The problem is complicated by the advent of taller rack systems, as well as higher density, narrow aisle systems, which only amplify the risks in the event of a rack collapse. When undertaking new construction or renovations to existing facilities involving pallet rack in seismic zones three and four, we strongly recommend that you consult with your local building department for current information on code restrictions in your area.

The rules vary widely depending on your locations. In most zone three and four areas, however, racking must be engineered for seismic events, which may mean a licensed engineer must design the system for code compliance. Do not assume that rack which may have been fabricated to R.M.I. (Rack Manufacturers' Institute) or A.I.S.C (American Institute of Steel Construction) standards will be code compliant under seismic conditions. These standards do not specifically address seismic considerations.
